Dear Member,

Today we give you an introduction to the Advanced Search, which is a treasured feature of Stampworld. we provide examples of how to use it, and a couple of examples of its use.

We also have two great recent stamp issues, that are both definitely worth checking out, as they feature great design, tradition, and history.

This, and much more, can be found below - happy reading!

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Stampworld Advanced Search

With the enormous number of stamps already available in the world, and many more introduced every day, it can be rather challenging to find exactly what you are looking for, by browsing through a regular catalogue.

If you are only looking for items from a specific country, this is a manageable task. However, if you are a thematic collector, this can be much more of a hassle, as many different countries issue all sorts of thematic stamps. In order to find all of these, you would have to go through catalogues of every issuing country of the world, which is an extremely large and time consuming task.

But don't despair. Stampworld's Advanced Search function allows you to limit your efforts, as it does most of the browsing and sorting for you.

So how does it work?

The Advanced Search searches the global Stampworld catalogue, and lets you filter the catalogue based on a range of criteria such as Country, Years of issue, Color, Denomination, Currency, and most importantly, Theme.

The search criteria can be used in any combination, and you can search by one, few, or all of them at the same time. The more criteria you choose, the more specific the search will be, and the less you will have to sort through, to find the stamp you are looking for.

For example, look at a collector, who is primarily interested in WWF stamps. As WWF is a worldwide organization, more than 200 countries have issued WWF-themed stamps since 1969, and to find the more than 2,000 WWF stamps, the collector would have to sort through the more than 500,000 stamps, which have been issued between 1969 and today. Using the thematic filter alone, will provide you with all the WWF stamps ever issued anywhere in the world, which currently is 2,428 stamps. You can find the list here.

If you want to limit the search to WWF stamps between 1979 and 1994, you start by choosing the starting year. After this, you choose the end of the period. Lastly you choose the theme. This particular search provided more than 800 results, and can be found here.

Another collector might only be looking for the latest flower themed stamps from France. In that case, you would start by choosing France from the country list. Then you would pick the years of relevance, which in this case would be 2015-2016. And lastly you would pick the top theme "Flora", and the sub-theme "Flowers". This would result in 30 French flower stamps from 2015 and 2016, as seen here.

These are all just examples, but the functions are the same for all the different criteria. If you would like to see how it works, here is a video of searching on Stampworld, which also includes an introduction to the Advanced Search.

In need of a Specialized Catalogue?

Stampworld is a great resource for many of our members, as we cover the entire world, with almost all stamps that were ever issued. However, some collectors go more in depth with certain areas, than what Stampworld offers at the moment. We want to be the first choice for all collectors, but we also accept the fact that there are still areas where we are lacking.
If you are that kind of collector, here are some great news - what you are looking for can be found right here!

MICHEL Catalogues have been around for many years, and have built up a great reputation, when it comes to specialized catalogues. They are used as a clear point of reference for many European collectors, who have historically based their collections on the MICHEL numbering system.
MICHEL carry a wide range of specialized catalogues, both on country and thematic levels, and is recommended if you need to go deeper than what we can currently offer.
